Seattle Great City Initiative’s July 10 brownbag will include a tour of Weber Thompson’s new highly sustainable headquarters, the Terry Thomas Building, as well as a presentation and discussion on LEED Neighborhood Development (ND).
The four-story Terry Thomas is Seattle’s first major office building in decades to be developed without air conditioning. The building’s passive cooling system features operable windows, automated louvers and a courtyard, which draws warm air out of the building. The building’s fixed and adjustable sun shades, as well as a light-colored roof, protect the building from solar heat gains. Other sustainable features include a highly efficient hydronic heating system, ample daylighting, daylight sensors on office lighting, Energy Star equipment, low-flow plumbing fixtures and waterless urinals.
Weber Thompson Principals Scott Thompson and Peter Greaves will lead the tour of the building, which is designed to meet LEED Gold Core and Shell certification and LEED Platinum Commercial Interior certification.
Weber Thompson Principal Catherine Benotto, and project manager for LEED ND documentation Ginger Garff will give the LEED for Neighborhood Development presentation.
LEED ND integrates the principles of smart growth, urbanism and green building into the first national system for neighborhood design. Currently in its pilot period, LEED for Neighborhood Development is collaboration among US Green Building Council, the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council. The post-pilot version of the rating system, which will be available to the public, is expected to launch in 2009.
