ProParks Levy Action Alert

On Tuesday March 25th, the Mayor announced his support for a levy for Pike Place Market, and did not support renewing the Parks Levy.   While this is not what we hoped for, the good news is that the City Council is still considering a parks/green infrastructure renewal under the leadership of Council President Conlin and Park Committee Chair Councilmember Rasmussen.  In addition, all five council members elected this past fall publicly committed to renewing the Parks Levy because it helps Seattle build and maintain green, active, and healthy communities.   We need your help to let the Mayor and City Council know that we still expect investments in parks and green infrastructure.  There is still plenty of time for the Council and Mayor to work together to create a package that makes the right investments in Seattle’s green future.

Seattle Great City Initiative supports investment in Seattle’s “green infrastructure” and has helped catalyze the formation of the Green Legacy Coalition composed of over twenty-five groups who support renewing the ProParks Levy. Our green infrastructure is a network of connected green spaces including parks, creeks, greenways, and streetscapes that enhance ecological function, protect Puget Sound water quality, and give Seattle’s residents places to gather and play.

If we pass up this opportunity, we will miss the chance to invest in essential amenities that make Seattle a liveable city, especially as the city grows.

We need to help shape the debate– so we are urging you to contact the Mayor and the city council and urge them to work to create a green infrastructure funding package on the 2008 Ballot (see sample letter, talking points, and facts sheet below).  In addition we need you to post comments to the following newspaper articles (here) and (here), and to post to others as they appear. Also, please send around an action alert to your friends, family, co-workers and neighbors urging them to comment to the council and mayor.
