2008 Accomplishments

Two years ago, we set out to create a city that was not only a great place to live and work, but a city that also lived up to our broader ideals. We knew that if we made the right decisions, we could enhance our quality of life, improve our local economy, and point the way to an environmentally sustainable city that is prosperous for all of us.

Because of your support, in the last year we have created real change in Seattle.

We led the renewal of the Parks Levy, which passed with almost 59% support. That means Seattle will have:

  • New parks and open spaces in rapidly growing neighborhoods.
  • New P-Patches, bike trails, playfields and playgrounds.
  • Urban forest and creek restoration.
  • And a robust opportunity fund for new neighborhood projects.

We established and activated a city-wide coalition to support new housing in walkable neighborhoods. Our accomplishments this past year include:

  • Helping pass through the Seattle City Council a reform of tax incentives that will allow for more affordable housing in new apartment buildings.
  • Supporting a community effort in Interbay for new zoning to help revitalize a neglected neighborhood.
  • Building a citywide coalition to support community objectives for South Downtown, Northgate, South Lake Union and light rail station areas.

In addition, our Neighborhood Assistance Program connected community groups with our expert volunteers to help plan and implement campaigns for neighborhood improvements, and we laid the foundation for our Streets for People campaign.

We could not have done this without the work of many active volunteers, and your financial support!
